Lot Title:

Undated (1795) Washington North Wales Halfpenny (Breen 1295, Baker 34, R.4, 97.2 grains. VF.
|
Description:
|
Marriage of Washington's portrait and the crowned Irish harp was a most dubious concept for circulating American coinage, so it is unlikely these were intended for export to the United States. Furthermore, there is no date, Washington's name is misspelled in monarchical style as "GEORGEIVS WASHINGTON", and the planchets are thin and underweight, struck by poorly prepared dies. Therefore, it has been proposed that these are "evasion pieces". Coins such as these, intentionally struck to look worn, cannot be graded by details alone, despite the absurd efforts of grading companies to assign impossibly accurate grades to them. Surface quality for this example suggests a moderate level of honest circulation with no problems of note, and an overall grade assessment of very-fine seems appropriate.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
