Lot Title:
1652 Pine Tree shilling, large planchet type, small tree, pellet on each side (Noe 1, 67.2 grains, R.1) VF/scratched/burnished.
Description:
The description as abbreviated in the title will sound harsher than is necessary upon closer inspection of this pine tree shilling. "Scratched" refers to some minor horizontal lines well below the right side of the tree, and some darker erratic scratches right of the date and denomination. The effect of these scratches has been reduced a little by gently and judiciously smoothed surfaces, the result being a coin that has nicely retoned, and bears up quite well to aesthetic standards. Battleship-grey tinges the surfaces, accented with splashes of dark freckles splashed across each side. The planchet is gently wavy, as struck, and fortuitously protects the primary device, such that the pine tree is virtually 100% complete, lacking only the very tip of the trunk.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
