Lot Title:
1662, "Small 2", Oak Tree Twopence (Noe-31, Crosby 1-A3, R.6+). PCGS VF-30.
Description:
As is so often the case for crudely produced coins, the certified grade is nearly inscrutable, as PCGS has elected to use impossibly precise arithmetic: VF-30. Why not VF-35? or VF-25? What factors went into such remarkable precision? What any evaluation has to take into account is a significantly off-center strike that has let about 15% of the tree side (obverse) off the flan, though the date side is much nearer to being centered. Closer scrutiny reveals the die break across the top of the "2" that identifies this R.6 variety, and also shows the surface quality to be highly acceptable for a Massachusetts silver. A couple or so tiny digs just beneath the denomination "II" and another similar bid on the obverse beading are the only apparent defects. The planchet seems to be very slightly cupped, which is expected of such coins. Whatever the "exact" grade, this is a pleasing coin with humble eye-appeal, and the accompanying scarcity is icing on the cake.
