Lot Title:

Undated (1663 - 1672) New Jersey St. Patrick or Mark Newby Fathing. Breen 208. PCGS VF-30.
Description:
By today's standards, the St. Patrick farthings have a humble and slightly crude appearance, yet these coins were actually made with exceptional care and to high standards of the day (circa 1663 - 1672). A drop of molten brass was added to each blank planchet, and the blanks must have been placed into the dies by hand, precisely aligned such that upon striking, the crown motif was struck over the brass spot. This gave the coins a regal appearance, with the "golden" crown standing out in fine contrast to the copper planchet, and along with a reeded edge, may have also served to curtail counterfeiting. Here is a drop-dead gorgeous original example which PCGS has graded VF-30, and although old time grading standards may have considered that an optimistic evaluation, most of the details remain bold, and the church is marvelously well defined to the Saint's right. PCGS calls this a "farthing" and the smaller pieces "halfpennies", but it is likely that these coins were never so denominated, and the difference in size merely represents the realities of economics.
