(About The Images)
1888 NGC MS-64. 1888 NGC MS-64.
Lot Title: 1888 NGC MS-64.
Description: 1888 is unquestionably one of the three or four most available three-dollar gold coins in any grade, including the present MS-64. Some collectors unfamiliar with the series might find that fact surprising, considering a low mintage of 5,000 pieces, but their survival rate was exceptionally high, as these simply did not circulate near the end of the century. Thus, it is always one of the best choices for use in a gold type set, and one always seems to be available somewhere in the marketplace, though of course, the wise collector will seek out a premium example at whatever grade level he settles upon.

At hand is a terrific type coin, one with an exceptional strike and swirling, opulent tortoise-shell luster shimmering across both sides. As with gold dollars of the same vintage, production standards were outstanding for the era, though it is interesting to note that UNITED and Liberty's lip are doubled on the obverse, a diagnostic of the business strikes. Planchet and surface quality are superb, displaying no copper spots, and merely the most trivial of tiny carbon specks on the upper reverse. On top of all the glowing attributes, this appears to be a fully original coin, sporting lovely orange-gold patina and no hairlines. The grade is determined strictly by a few scattered tiny ticks.

Taken as a whole this seems to be a Choice Uncirculated 3-dollar gold piece, with amazingly attractive luster and very little contact to speak of. Except, as bad luck would have it, that a hit...

1888 PCGS MS-63.
Mintage: 5000. 3-dollar gold coins of this late-date era simply did not circulate, so the terribly low mintages often belie true availability. In fact, 1888 actually takes a place among the more...

1888 XF details/cleaned.
Overall demeanor really is still fairly decent despite a mild, old cleaning, since the edge devices continue to protect some luster, and there are no large abrasions. The only notable mark rests up...

1888 NGC PF-64 Ultra Cameo.
