(About The Images)
1866 w/ Rays ICG MS-65. 1866 w/ Rays ICG MS-65.
Lot Title: 1866 w/ Rays ICG MS-65.
Description: Subtle appeal emanates from the fully lustrous surfaces, although this is by no means a flashy coin, and closer inspection is necessary to appreciate the finer attributes of this ICG MS-65 piece. The original skin remains intact after generations of in collectors' hands, and for that matter, astute collectors know that the inaugural issue for the Shield nickel series is often a little dull. "18" in the date is handily repunched, and either side displays evidence of clashed dies.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1866 w/ Rays. NGC PF-66 CAMEO.
66 graded PF-66 CAM, 8 higher. The NGC grade denotes just about the ultimate level for this esteemed proof type coin, popular for inclusion in sets as the "first of series" date. Although a few have...
537The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$450.00
1866 w/ Rays. PCGS MS-63.
Underestimated as a type, the 1866 "with rays" nickel is not easy to locate "nice", with unfavorable production and corrosion problems common for many examples. Even this choice MS-63 shows evidence...
326The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,350.00
1866 w/ Rays. NGC MS-65.
Strong luster gallops around the shield and the denomination, and energizes expectations of GEM quality. Closer inspection reveals surfaces that are just about as nice as one expects of MS-65,...
494The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$675.00
1866 w/ Rays. NGC MS-64.
A mere trace of rainbow toning beckons from the right side of the obverse, complemented by tendrils of additional color that placidly travel through protected areas in the fields. Uneven strike...
291The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$280.00
1866 w/ Rays. PCGS MS-63.
An underrated type coin, 1866 "rays" suffers from the same fate as all shield nickels: the series is just not popular. This example exemplifies many of the attributes that troubled the mint,...
241The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$260.00
1866 w/ Rays. MS-63.
This inaugural 1866 "with rays" issue the shield nickel series makes for an excellent type coin as it appears to grade MS-63 and has none of the surface problems that plague early examples of the...
242The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$600.00
1866 w/ Rays. MS-64.
The consignor states that this outstanding 1866 "rays" shield nickel was removed from an NGC MS-64 holder, and careful examination finds little to argue with that grade. Luster is limited as usual...
243The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$325.00
1866 w/ Rays and 1867 w/Rays.
Both shield nickel issues "with rays" are available in this lot. 1866 grades AU, with the caveat that some carbon staining of the surfaces is nearly unavoidable for a nickel coin of the era. The...
244The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$230.00
1866 w/ Rays AU and 1867 no Rays AU.
Although both of these coins warrant AU consideration, the 1866 displays ultra-fine microporosity that has dulled the luster significantly. 1867 "no rays" suffers no such problems, and displays...

1866 w/ Rays. PCGS MS-64.
Soft russet toning is visible around the peripheries of both sides of this two year "With Rays" type. Great shield details along with very clean fields qualify it for the next grade, but perhaps the...

925The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$775.00
1866 w/ Rays. NGC MS-64.

1866 w/ Rays. MS-60.
Rich orange, yellow, and violet tones are seen on both sides, but it is questionable as to whether or not this color is natural. It appears artificial, but you be the judge. It is doubtful NGC or...
