Lot Title:
1850-D NGC AU-55.
Description:
Because of the romance attached to southern gold pieces, Dahlonega gold issues are avidly sought by collectors of classic gold.. This particular piece still retains a fair amount of original luster and exhibits handsome golden surfaces enhanced by green iridescence. It is devoid of obtrusive marks or abrasions and is atypical as for as striking definition. NGC has certified only 29 pieces at this grade level, while the PCGS Population Report shows only 18 examples, and combined, both of these grading services report just 39 examples finer. Remarkably, the finest grade assigned to this particular date is MS-61, for which NGC reports 4, and PCGS 2. Based upon population reports, it's apparent that this AU-55 piece should be for a sophisticated collection of southern gold.
