Lot Title:
1853-D Large D PCGS Genuine.
Description:
Lemon-gold sheen is immediately unnaturally bright and reflective to the eye, and this is called out by the PCGS Genuine-94 code, which indicates "altered surfaces". Sure enough, a loupe reveals a multitude of artificial luster lines imparted by the whizzing process. Sometimes, gold is harshly so treated in order to hide major flaws, but in this case, it appears the desire was merely to clean this coin, though we can certainly all agree that the method used was excessive. From an original mintage of nearly ninety-thousand pieces, 1853-D remains the most common half-eagle available from Dahlonega, and popular as a type coin.

This Half Eagle started its life with a solid, but average, impression. The surfaces are respectable with a normal amount of bag marks for the grade. |
