Lot Title:

1794 (O-101a, R.4) Good/obverse scratch.
|
Description:
|
Good/obverse scratch is accurately descriptive, although the supposed "scratch" is of minor consequence in the center of Liberty's upper tresses. As a near-miss for the full "very-good" grade, the eagle's head and the upper edge of both wings are barely outlined and would require a little more delineation, but dentilation is amazing full on the reverse, and nearly so on the obverse. It appears this coin was lightly cleaned at one time, not because of obvious hairlines, but rather because of a hint of glossy texture that is almost imperceptible on the reverse but has a slightly waxy appearance on the obverse. Of course, we all know that scarcely any 18th century American coin has escaped cleaning at one time or another, and what is seen here is mild at worst. O-101 is undoubtedly the most available die-marriage for 1794, though "a" is a scarcer die-state, and the reverse of this coin is actually even more advanced in age than that, with the diagnostic die crack at 10:00 accompanied by another well worn at 2:00.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Nine berries left, and ten right quickly attribute O-104, an R.5 die-marriage. Surfaces have the somewhat rough look of a ground find, yet the "environmental damage" noted by the NCS holder is not... |
