Lot Title:
1883 NGC AU-58.
Description:
Closer to original than what is often seen, this 1883 three-dollar gold offers appealing peach-gold patina draped across semi-reflective surfaces, with slightly more pale golden undertones apparent in the protected areas. Perhaps reflecting more stringent grading than in years past, the AU-58 grade appropriately reflects just scant wear on the highpoints, including friction just below the band of the crown and atop Liberty's ear and lower curl. The bow of the wreath displays a hint of wear as well. A smallish gash at the bottom of Liberty's neck is the only notable handling mark.

Here is everything one could hope for and more in a gold coin at the AU-55 grade. Deep crimson-gold patina adorns the edge areas, framing strongly prooflike devices with a three-dimensional quality... |
