Lot Title:
1881 PCGS Genuine (AU+ details/altered surfaces).
Description:
1881 is the scarcest three-dollar gold coin of its decade, and very nearly attains key status for the entire series. This example has details that are rather sharply struck, which is one of the advantages of low emission (500 minted), and the merest touch of circulation leads to an assessment of AU-58 details. PCGS has indicated "altered surfaces" (code 94), and that appears to be indicative of a faint olive-tan haze that has been thinly layered over the fields. The alteration is akin to "thumbing" a Morgan dollar in that the effects of friction and trivial hairlines can be minimized by their suppression. For the astute bidder, this represents an opportunity, as your cataloger humbly suggests this process is reversible, and removal of the offending pollutant could reveal an outstanding coin with considerable value in a straight-graded holder. Judging by surface texture, this could prove to be a semi-prooflike gold coin. In a short-lived series, opportunities to obtain a difficult issue like this come along seldom, so please give careful consideration to this lot.

1881 PCGS AU-53.

Prooflike character remains visible despite seven points of wear, and even hazy friction in the fields still fails to suppress all the underlying reflectivity. Very few distractions are to be found... |
