(About The Images)
1795 (B-14, R-3) ANACS VF-25. 1795 (B-14, R-3) ANACS VF-25.
Lot Title: 1795 (B-14, R-3) ANACS VF-25.
Description: Many collectors do not realize that the draped bust portrait, which dominated early silver coinage with similar designs early in the mint's history, began on the silver dollar, and later made its way to the smaller denomination coins. The aesthetically wonderful B-14 "off center bust" has artistic merit unintended by the die sinker, as he simply placed the portrait too far left by accident. Some would say that the unbalanced presentation has an interesting off balance quality not seen on later, correctly centered dies, but such artistic merit was not foremost in the early mint's intentions -- production was. Besides, such mistaken centering of major devices would likely have led to strike quality issues, with improper metal flow at the time of striking. At any rate, Liberty's draped bust design was never more beautifully realized than on these large silver coins, and after the scrawny eagle on the reverse was later replaced by the far more creative heraldic eagle, the mint had a product to truly take pride in.

This example of B-14 is encapsulated in a smaller ANACS holder with a VF-25 grade, but no indication of Bolender variety. Your cataloger suggests that this is a classic example of "silent net grading", since the sharpness is at least that of VF-30, and arguably five points higher than that, although the eagle's breast is admittedly flatly struck. Detracting from the overall grade is evidence of slide marks on the lower bust and shoulder area as well as on the cheek, and for that matter, the aforementioned flatness of the eagle's breast seems to have made it particularly susceptible to abrasion, as patina is literally worn off the area. In addition, the impression of a darker streak of patina from 12:00 to 6:00 is given by the obverse. In truth, all together these comments really add up to little distraction, since this coin easily stands on its own merits and is an attractive piece with something of an original appearance. There are no distracting digs or dings, and though not quite "crusty", there is some original dirt still left clinging to some more complex details.
