1724 Period After Date, Ten Harpstrings Hibernia Farthing. Martin 3.9-D.1, Breen 175, Rarity-4, 51.2 grains. VF.
Description:
Lovely brassy-pecan color consistently dominates the open fields of this Hibernia farthing, except for an area of slightly lighter patina that washes over the upper area of the seated figure on the reverse. Some darker walnut-gold patina embedded within the letters and devices provides an added dimension to the overall look, yielding a classy and desirable choice presentation overall. All 1724-dated Hibernia coins are much scarcer than their 1723-dated counterparts, and to find one with this nice an appearance is a genuine treat. The obverse has full borders and is better centered than the reverse, which is lacking just a little of the lower right rim. Due to proper placement on the flan, the peripheral details are sharply defined, including the date, which is bold as can be. Most of King George's hair details are present above and behind his ear, with some softness of strike notable nearer the center of the obverse. The seated figure of Hibernia leaning on a harp, holding a palm-branch in her hand is familiar to colonial specialists, but of course is more meaningful to inhabitants of Ireland. In this case, there is some notable weakness at the center of the reverse that appears to be a related to planchet thickness, rather than die characteristics, since the weight is given as 51.2 grains -- perhaps 10% lighter than average. Competing high grade specimens of Martin 3.9-D.1 are well detailed by comparison. From the standpoint of preservation, obviously aside from normal circulation wear, this is a remarkably fortunate coin that displays hardly any nicks or marks expected from a perilous journey through the channels of commerce. Little more than the most trivial of circulation marks may be seen once on the obverse, and perhaps twice on the reverse, but this is really nitpicking. Even the fussiest colonial collector could find no real fault with this beauty.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
