1776 Machin's Mills (Atlee Imitation Halfpence). Vlack 6-76A, Rarity-4, 100.7 grains. F.
Description:
Many colonial collectors are familiar with the story of the Machins Mills (correctly spelled without an apostrophe in "Machins"), but for those interested in a quick synopsis.... Thomas Machin competed for, but failed to win, the competition to set up a legal mint for the State of New York (the idea was rejected outright, and no state mint was ever set up). Therefore, Thomas did the next best thing, and gathered a group of associates to set up an illegal mint in an abandoned brewery in the murky backwoods of New York and begin striking fake British halfpence from dies produced by James Atlee (one of the associates). This 1776 example is and example of their work. Rather rough, as is usually the case for Vlack 6-76A, much of this roughness was present at the time of production, and perhaps these coins were intentionally produced to already appear "old". The date -- which always appeals to collectors searching for coins of America's birth year -- is strongly placed on the planchet, and each side is rather well centered.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
