Lot Title:

1723 Hibernia Halfpenny, no stop before H of HIBERNIA,. NGC MS-63 BN.
Description:
Consistency in grading for colonial coins has not nearly reached the level of scientific accuracy that it has for, say, Morgan dollars. Thus, for any particular grade, considerable variability in quality is possible for a given issue. Evaluation of individually hand-made colonial coins simply has to take into account for more variables than for coins that are minted to surgical tolerances and come off an automated assembly line. Bidders will be pleasantly surprised to find that the quality of this 1723 Hibernia seems quite nice for the NGC MS-63 BN grade. Choice in every respect, from planchet quality to strike to preservation, all reasonable expectations are met or exceeded, and the only factor that warrants even the slightest negative commentary is a medium carbon spot in the upper right obverse field. There are virtually no handling marks at all, and despite the "brown" designation, perceptible orange-rose mint color is faded nicely into the brown fields from the peripheral areas. A coin of substantial appeal and considerable quality!
