Lot Title:
1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 8-C, Rarity-3, 174.6 grains. XF.
Description:
(Ex. Stack's 5/2007: 508) Unusually well centered except that the date is a tad close to the bottom reverse edge. This attractive auburn-brown copper benefits from a planchet that seems just a hair larger than normal, which allows the lettering to stand well clear from the edges and promotes an uncluttered appearance. Surface quality is not quite perfectly smooth, as some tiny planchet fissures align themselves alongside the word WEALTH on the right of the obverse. These, along with a moderate planchet void left of the Indian's belt are as struck. An idle patch of hairlines can be found right of the Indian's head, as mentioned in the Stack's description, and the rims have received insignificant bumps in a few places. A very well balanced coin that can easily augment any type collection of Colonial pieces.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
