Lot Title:

1785 Nova Constellatio Copper/ Pointed Rays Obverse/ Large US Reverse. Crosby 3-B, Breen 1111, R-2. PCGS XF-40.
Description:
PCGS has commercially graded this Nova Constellatio as XF-40, but the inner ends of the sun's rays are notably flat, and there is a surprisingly prominent rim bump at 1:00. Apparently, not much is expected of the "extremely fine" grade these days. But these detriments are simply a reflection of how colonial coins are graded in today's environment. Regardless, no fault can be found with the smooth, sienna-brown surfaces, and while the obverse is slightly off-center south, the reverse is about perfectly centered.
