Lot Title:
1740 E (Tours Mint) French Colonies Sous Marques. Vlack 78, Rarity-7, 31.9 grains. MS-60.
Description:
Exquisite detail and intricately struck legends are quite unexpected of such an early French Colonies piece, and overall eye appeal benefits from very attractive graphite-silver surfaces on a fairly well centered planchet. The consignor remarked upon a sizeable die break jutting out to the right from the mintmark ("E", denoting the Tours mint). Despite its appearance as a technically uncirculated coin, an ancient shallow scratch can be found near the bottom left of the date side, not far above the mintmark, but it is virtually invisible within the striated toning pattern. The consignor also notes that Ford owned no Tours pieces in uncirculated grades, and given his ability to choose the finest French colonials at a time when nobody else was collecting them, this is a significant testament to the rarity of the present piece in this state of preservation.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
