Lot Title:

1787 Connecticut Copper, "AUCTOPI" obverse, "ET IIB" reverse. Miller 42-kk.2, High Rarity-5, 148.0 grains. VF.
|
Description:
|
Pea-green iridescence just barely makes its presence known atop the olive-tan surfaces of this attractive Connecticut copper. Although the all-important (to this variety anyway) AUCTOPI error touches the edge due to an uncentered strike, CONNECT sits well on the flan, while the reverse unfortunately has lost at least the lower half of the digits in the date due to the improper centering. Nevertheless, those details which are concentrated at the edges are nicely struck, including the lower folds in the obverse effigy's drapery, and the bottom of the seated figure. Even the obverse facial features are discernible, though the hair and other central features on either side are very indistinct due to strike. Remarkably free of any obvious post mint impairments, the only visual detractions include a couple of minor planchet voids present at the time of striking, and a thinly visible scratch extending left from the mouth. Truly an appealing and desirable coin.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
