Lot Title:

(1663 - 1672) New Jersey St. Patrick or Mark Newby Farthing. Breen 212, Griffee 33-8/3a, High Rarity-7, 84.5 grains. VF.
|
Description:
|
Very pleasing caramel-brown patina embraces this entire coin, occasionally accented in areas of the obverse (splasher side) by darker planchet recesses, as struck. Four examples of Griffee 33-8/3a are known, this being considered equal to the finest(C4 John M. Griffee Sale 10/21/1995: 178). Obverse legends are bold, FLOREAT being just a bit more legible than REX, and the reverse legend is uniformly readable, despite varying width of the letters. The "tricolon" referenced in several texts is called the "Masonic punctuation" by Breen and lead to attribution of the die variety, as do the "sea beasts below king". Surface quality is exceptional for this type, and the splasher intact despite moderate overall wear. Irregularity in the level of detail of the Saint motif is due to die failure, as is the inconsistent upper-central details of the obverse, but for grading purposes, more credence is given the excellent surfaces, as it is difficult to locate a St. Patrick farthing in middle grades with such smooth quality. VF overall.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
