(1688) American Plantation Token. Newman 5-D, Breen 78 (1828 Restrike). Rarity-5, 134.2 grains.

Description:
|
(Ex. Stack's 1/16/2007: 6383) It is nearly impossible to locate an American Plantation Token restrike with nice surface quality, since the metal composition of which they were formed (which Newman termed "Britannia Metal", similar to pewter) is highly reactive and corrodes easily. In addition, the dies were already 140 years old by the time they were used to restrike these tokens, and by then they had themselves rusted. Nonetheless, this is an attractive and surprisingly sharp coin that has acquired an interesting two-toned appearance due to some remaining silver wash in the protected areas. Legends are easily legible, and finer details on the reverse shields can be seen without a glass. Worn highpoints have acquired a deeply leaden hue. Original tokens were struck in essentially pure tin and were the first regally authorized coins for the American colonies.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
