Lot Title:
1652 Noe-2, "Straight Tree", Large Planchet (clipped) Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling. Rarity-5, 41.2 grains.
Description:
(Ex. Coin Galleries Sale 5/2005: 1142) Although it began life as a "large planchet" pine-tree shilling, contemporary clipping of the edges has reduced the size considerably, leaving behind just the fragmentary tops of the peripheral lettering. Consistent charcoal-grey is undoubtedly original, as is a light bend in the planchet (caused during the manufacturing process), and the date, denomination and tree motif have survived the ravages of time and human intervention. No grade assigned, as it truly is impossible to "grade" a coin like this (nor is "grade" really relevant).
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
