Lot Title:
1871 PCGS MS-65.
Description:
Silky smooth and practically unblemished on either side, with delightful cartwheel luster glowing prominently from either side of the shield. Wonderful die cracks scuttle across each side, and the "871" in the date is drastically repunched north. Shield nickels are fascinating to study for die varieties, and just as an example, it is intriguing to note that each of the digits "1" in the date look like they were punched with different punches! This remains a sadly neglected series, and business strikes in gem grades are a bargain by comparison to availability. PCGS has graded only 24 examples MS-65 with 5 finer for 1871.
