Description:

With the exception of the 1873, obtaining a $5 Liberty prior to 1878 in such a lofty grade is one of the tougher challenges in numismatics. In fact, in the Coin Dealer Newsletter pricing sheets, a few squiggly lines is all that is printed in the price field for grades MS-64 and above for many dates because so few are traded. Such is the case with the 1846. Out of the mere 35 total 1846 examples NGC and PCGS have combined to grade at the Mint State level, just three have graded MS-64 (all by NGC), and not a single example has graded higher. And, while 35 are recorded to have been graded uncirculated, it is very likely that at least some of those coins were counted multiple times because of the common practice of resubmission. Post-mint impairments are in line with expectations for the MS-64 grade. Close examination does reveals that a portion of the obverse field area is occupied by uneven planchet quality, particularly in the obverse lower-right quadrant. The effect is noticeable only from the standpoint of luster. There is definitely a golden-frost appearance to the relief, which makes for a pleasing contrast against the brilliance of the fields. The pristine quality of the reverse confirms the MS-64 grade.

The powdery lemon-gold patina seems at first glance more in keeping with a coin struck at Charlotte, and furthering the impersonation is a lack of sharpness on the highpoint details. As is typical of... |

According to David Akers, the die used to strike the reverse of the 1846 half-eagle was also used to strike proof examples of 1844, 1845, 1848, and possibly 1847. It is further interesting to note... |
