Lot Title:

1846 Large Date. NGC AU-58.
Description:
The powdery lemon-gold patina seems at first glance more in keeping with a coin struck at Charlotte, and furthering the impersonation is a lack of sharpness on the highpoint details. As is typical of gold coins of the era, cartwheel effect is less pronounced than it would be on coins struck decades later, but flowline luster consistently occupies all peripheral areas. This coin has survived the ravages of time with very little evidence of handling, a few ticks around the eagle's head being the only notable blemishes.
