(About The Images)
1864 PCGS MS-68. 1864 PCGS MS-68.
Lot Title: 1864 PCGS MS-68.
Description: PCGS has only awarded two 'no motto' examples MS-68 (none higher), and they have graded exactly one (and NGC zero) 1864 Seated Liberty quarter-dollars at the MS-68 grade level. At hand is that lone coin, still housed in a rattler slab. Review of the tiny PCGS population in the next couple of lower grades succinctly expresses the rarity of a coin of this caliber: just two are graded MS-67, and only three are MS-66, suggesting that it may never be possible to surpass the quality of this miracle-coin at PCGS. Studious technical analysis of the surfaces fails to reveal any large blemishes, and what separates this coin from perfection is the presence of but a very few minor abrasions on Liberty's portrait. Those which are to be found are tiny. Fields are astoundingly clean, and the reverse virtually flawless. A delicate honey-tan veneer has settled gracefully and comparably across each side, intensifying a bit at the margins so as to provide a wonderful "framed" appearance. And though a clashed die has produced some die cracks on both sides, the dies were still able to sustain a strike powerful enough to produce exceptionally sharp detail, including full delineation of every star and every line in both shields. An unsurpassable numismatic treasure!
