Lot Title:
1868 NGC PF-63 Cameo.
Description:
While there definitely seems to be fewer hairlines than expected of the seemingly conservative PF-63 grade, one must admit that the extensive toning may serve to attenuate their detrimental effect somewhat. Regardless, this is a flat out nice proof coin, featuring unmistakable cameo contrast between the consistently frosted devices and the watery fields. Luxurious cobalt-blue toning layers the left obverse edge with rich color, while the balance of the obverse is drenched in golden-honey patina. The reverse, which might grade PF-65, is even more attractive, bearing similar colors in a more regular pattern of navy-blue rims that evolve to a cinnamon-red periphery layered over tan-gold surfaces.
