Lot Title:
|
1897-O AU/polished.
|
Description:
|
1897-O is the key to the Barber half-dollar series in most collector grades, up through XF or so, where the 1904-S begins to assert its rarity. Sadly, this 1897-O has been polished to an unnatural sheen, though subsequent coloration has at least toned down the now-mirrored surfaces substantially. A nearly uncirculated coin, most signs of wear have been practically erased by the cleaning process, but flatness shows above Liberty's brown, and circulation marks can be seen on her cheek. In spite of the problem, a very scarce coin with this much detail.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Ronald Zink Early Type Collection. A difficult key to the series in any grade, 1897-O becomes particularly elusive with LIBERTY readable on the headband, yet that is the situation here. Most if not... |

Carbon spots of rather sizeable appearance can be seen above Liberty's hair, and it appears some effort was made to dip the coin in a failed attempt to remove them. Surprisingly, given the... |

This date has the second lowest recorded mintage for this series during the 19th century. Even though it was subjected to a light cleaning, it retains a stately medium gray surface aspect. A light... |
