Lot Title:
1809 (S-280) F.
Description:
Any collector attempting to assemble a large-cent set by either date or Sheldon variety knows the difficulty in acquiring a pleasing 1809 with good surface quality. They simply don't exist in significant numbers, but the present S-280 is the rare exception to the rule. This coin features uncommonly smooth surfaces and supremely attractive color that is rare for any Classic Head, and downright unheard of for a well circulated 1809. Despite the substantial loss of detail due to just honest wear, some peripheral flowline luster incredibly remains visible between the stars on the right side of the obverse. Your cataloger suggests that the disparity of remaining detail between the two sides is worthy of a split grade of VG-8/F-12. The die crack at the top of the wreath is bold and extends well into the rim. EAC 8.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
