Lot Title:
1855 Wass-Molitor $50. PCGS AU-50.
Description:
As is usually the case for these massive chunks of gold, moderate abrasions pepper each side due to use in circulation. Distinctive rouge toning accents all the devices, producing an even more bold appearance than is suggested by the PCGS AU-50 grade, and original mint luster can be seen in these same areas. The Wass-Molitor fifty-dollar gold coin was struck in response to a lack of circulating gold currency in the west during the 1850s, and followed issuance of five and ten dollar gold coins in prior years. The obverse mimics the prevailing design of current Federal issues, while the reverse simply states the gold content and face value in explicit terms.
