Lot Title:

1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. "Pike's Peak" half-eagle, XF.
|
Description:
|
The eagle and double-eagle Clark, Gruber and Co. issues bear a pyramid shaped depiction of Pike's Peak, but the quarter-eagle and half-eagle more closely emulate their respective Federal denominations with an eagle on the reverse. The example offered here is a very original coin, save a failed puncture attempt which resulted in a surface disturbance between the first two stars and Liberty's chin. The apparent damage must be considered in the context of how the firm minted half-eagles in 1860: the planchets were unalloyed Pike's Peak gold. Since gold from this area was among the purist mined in North America, the coins were susceptible to abrasions and damage from even minimal handling. Removal of the detraction from this particular example could considerably enhance its appeal, but even as it is, this is a valuable artifact of Colorado's commercial history.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
