Lot Title:
1879 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, J-1626, P-1822, R-4, PCGS PF-63.
Description:
Demonstrating that the concept of a "smaller silver dollar" of modern times is not a new idea, the purpose of the "goloid dollar" was to test the viability of a coin which, though smaller than the then-current Morgan dollars in general use, nonetheless retained appropriate metallic content (bullion value) because of the small amount of gold present in the planchet. A complex formula spells out the precious metal content: 15.3 G(old), 236.7 S(ilver) and 28 C(opper)

So unusual is it to see a pattern coin so perfectly circulated that it appeared almost too perfect, such that the esteemed Scotsman Auction Company adroitly decided to have certification... |
