Lot Title:
1869 NGC PF-64.
Description:
From a purely artistic point of view, this is undoubtedly one of the most attractive coins in today's sale, and it is in an embossed NGC holder. Though graded only PF-64, the stunning aesthetic appeal far surpasses technical considerations. A highly brilliant and heavily frosted obverse portrait is immediately surrounded by superb reflectivity, which is itself dressed in a sheath of marvelous royal-blue and burgundy-gold colors. The reverse has begun to acquire a similar countenance, though the peripheral color is concentrated in the lower left quadrant. As expected, the strike is razor sharp. The technical deficiencies that determine the grade include a couple pin scratches off of Liberty's upper left (observed) arm and a handful of trivial hairlines, and there is a small, bent strike-through in the right obverse field. The connoisseur of numismatic beauty can easily forgive such distractions, as this coin is simply a knock-out from the standpoint of sheer aesthetic quality.

Even in proof format, Seated Liberty coins of the mid-nineteenth century sometimes suffered incomplete strike details, but not so this amazingly sharp example. The only area of minor softness noted... |
