Lot Title:
1785 (Miller 6.2-F.1) Connecticut copper, bust right VF
Description:
126.5 grains. A prominent date and plainly visible legends on both sides provide immediate evidence as to the outstanding sharpness of this whimsical variety and die state, the so-called "goatee break". Technically, the goatee is not fully formed, as coins struck later in the life of the dies display a grotesquely large crack across the right edge of the right-facing portrait. At any rate, this is a very acceptable example, displaying mild to moderate, evenly distributed microporosity whose negative visual impact is significantly attenuated by the very attractive color scheme. Pleasingly free of the planchet flaws that typically plague the type. Sharpness is outstanding, probably reaching the upper end of "extremely fine", but attention must be called to a small "twist" in the extreme lower planchet that has mildly disrupted the integrity of the rim. A moderate punch above the reverse effigy's head no doubt is responsible for the dent, and is accounted for in our net grade.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
