(About The Images)
1820/19 (O-102) Capped Bust half-dollar, NGC MS-60 1820/19 (O-102) Capped Bust half-dollar, NGC MS-60
Lot Title: 1820/19 (O-102) Capped Bust half-dollar, NGC MS-60
Description: The Overton variety that corresponds to "1820/19 curl base 2" is not indicated on the NGC slab, but is easy to confirm as O-102, since the O-101 overdate features a "square base 2". Of course, the overdate feature itself is very obvious, which is a factor that compels this as one of the most popular "naked eye" varieties in the Overton series.

As an early half-dollar collector, your cataloger believes it is prudent to always approache the grade of a certified bust half with caution, but reflecting on the quality of the example at hand, the NGC assignment of an MS-60 grade seems highly appropriate. Unbroken mint luster penetrates all the fields entirely, though in keeping with the basic "mint-state" grade, it is weakest in the broadest expanse of the fields. There is no evidence of wear on the highpoints, though the cabinet friction makes its presence felt on the hair curl behind Liberty's ear - almost always the first place such friction is found. Finally, the eye appeal is actually quite good, with both faces displaying obvious original quality and outstanding strike details.

Really, the overriding factor that determines this coin's grade is the fragile luster, and that is due more to the dense patination than anything else. All in all, this is a very satisfying example of this popular variety that would look good in just about any cabinet of uncirculated bust coins.
