1912-D NGC MS-65.
|
Description:
|
Though 1912-D is hardly a rarity in the series, in the opinion of your humble cataloger, this is the finest and most desirable Barber half-dollar available in today’s sale. No number of superlative adjectives can adequately convey the magnificent eye appeal of this fabulous coin, and it is not deficient in any aspect of preservation.
The strike is fantastic. Every star displays segmentation, the ribbon off the lower end of the cap actually has visibly raised edges along its entire length, and the little curl of hair just in front of Liberty’s hair is fully defined. The Eagle’s feathers are fully sculpted, and his eye pupil is deeply etched.
Meanwhile, the preservation of this piece must be considered nothing short of glorious! Powder blue toning has settled about most of the periphery, occasionally giving way to a touch of deep-bronze color at the extreme edges, and combined with a fabulous mother-of-pearl texture, the visual effect can hardly be conveyed in mere words.
From a strictly technical standpoint, some minute abrasions below the eye and one tiny horizontal bagmark on the neck are all that deny a higher grade, but there is a point at which the importance of aesthetics far exceeds that of technical standards, and this coin is at that point. A simply amazing coin that must be considered by any true aficionado of the series.

One of our graders called this coin MS-63, but there appears to be some slight friction, so let's be on the safe side and award it the AU-58 grade. Scattered russet toning can be seen on both sides. |
