Lot Title:
1787 “Unity States” Vlack 27-W XF-45.
Description:
Although it is not known precisely when the "Unity States" cents were struck, a good guess might be that it was sometime in the 1820s, most likely in Birmingham, England. They were produced with intentionally striated planchets, usually filed down at the edges to make them rough and give the freshly minted coins a “used” appearance. This leads to the likely conclusion that they were evasion issues, with the intentional misspelling of “UNITY” (United) used to refute potential charges that the coins were minted to pass as official Federal issues. The date commemorates the end of the Revolutionary War, rather than the date of minting.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
