(About The Images)
1869 XF-45 and 1870 AU-50. 1869 XF-45 and 1870 AU-50.
Lot Title: 1869 XF-45 and 1870 AU-50.
Description: It is well known that there is no definitive distinction between proof and business strike production of silver dimes, as some of the highest grade business strikes that exist today actually were used in proof sets by the Mint, especially during the first few years after the Civil War. At that time, the mint made little distinction between the two production methods, and if an order came in for a Proof Set, a high-quality business strike might be casually substituted if no proof examples were on hand. Therefore, there is much subjectivity surrounding attribution of these coins with regard to production method. With this conscientious preface in mind, your cataloger feels confident that both of these coins are in fact business strikes, and not circulated proofs. Neither the reflectivity nor the exacting detail typically seen on a verifiable proof appears on either coin, and the sharpness at the edge of each Roman numeral that would be characteristic of a proof is lacking. Certainly, both of these coins circulated, though only lightly, and each is similarly patinated in mauve-brown color, though the 1870 also possesses some subtle rainbow iridescence. Two coin lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
