Lot Title:
1721-H (La Rochelle Mint) French Colonies Copper Nine Deniers, Breen 261. PCGS VF-25.
Description:
The Edict of June, 1721 issued by Louis XV authorized this coinage for French America. It decreed a total number of 2,000,000 pieces to be struck for the Nine Deniers issues of 1721 and 1722. The 1721-dated pieces made up approximately 20 percent of this total. Although this specimen is struck off center, resulting in some of the obverse legend being slightly weak and off the flan, its lovely tan appearance is exceptionally appealing. There is a lamination flaw on the obverse, beneath the crowned L's, as well as some slight planchet roughness. These blemishes are due to the original quality of the planchets. Examples of either the 1721 or the 1722 issues are almost unattainable at higher grade levels. Although there was an initial reluctance by the populace for this coinage, it eventually endured a long term acceptance.
