Lot Title: 1866-S No Motto. XF-45 Details, Scratched.
Description: San Francisco gold coins of this era typically show signs of extensive use, and combined with low initial mintages, it is no wonder they are so difficult to locate in high grades. Indeed, no Mint State survivor of the present issue has ever been certified, though at least one example is rumored to exist. Reasonably original in appearance, especially on the reverse, but regrettably, a pair of claw marks swipe through Liberty’s middle-left portrait, the rightmost scratch being briefly interrupted in front of the neck. A difficult coin to find with decent detail.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1866-S No Motto. NCS XF Details, Obv. Scratched.
A pair of curved scratches near the center of the obverse confirm the NCS disclaimer of "scratched", but they do not severely impact the appearance of this somewhat more difficult half-eagle. Myriad...

1866-S "no motto" Coronet half-eagle, VF-35, scratched
Mere hints of mint luster define the technical grade, and the strike is significantly better than average for this very difficult issue in the half-eagle series. Of the 9000 minted, many were melted,...
