(About The Images)
1803 S-258 Small Date, Large Fraction. XF-40. 1803 S-258 Small Date, Large Fraction. XF-40.
Lot Title: 1803 S-258 Small Date, Large Fraction. XF-40.
Description: A well-struck Draped Bust large-cent isn’t all that unusual, but the present example possesses unusually conspicuous details that exceed the norm. Framed nicely against natural, dark fields, Liberty's portrait stands out in bold relief with each strand of hair expertly delineated, while on the reverse, the wreath's leaves are correspondingly bold. Rims are particularly clear of any problems, but the grade is implied by a couple of minor scrapes left of Liberty's curls, and a pair of pin-scratches at "OF" on the reverse. This is S-258 (Die State III) as attributed by an arcing die-crack from the "1" in the date, through Liberty's lower curls and turning left to touch the rim at 9 o'clock, along with a die gash above "D" on the reverse. EAC VF-25.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

285The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$340.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction (S-258) PCI, as described.
Scotsman grade: [VF-20/recolored]. Experience suggests that PCI "gold label" holders must be approached with caution, but this is a happy instance where the grade isn't far from reality for the...
311The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$525.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction. SEGS XF-45...
SEGS indicates an "old cleaning" to accompany XF-45 details, although we consider details to be more on par with the commercial VF-30 level, since there really isn't quite enough delineation between...
338The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$975.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction (S-260, R.1) AU details/cleaned.
Surfaces are curiously smooth at first glance, requiring additional inspection to realized the coin has been polished at some point. Subsequently, either over time or via artificial methods,...
129The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,950.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction (S-261). PCGS XF-45 CAC.
Die state III is easily identified by the curving die crack that rests over her shoulder like a baseball bat. Give this lady a glove and let her play left field for the Cardinals! Possibly modestly...
221The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$625.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction. NGC VF-35 BN.
A pleasing, clean, and bold appearance describes this attractive large cent. Free of any planchet issues and pretty well preserved. The lack of a serif on the date’s first digit specifies a “small...
258The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,800.00
1803 Small Date, Large Fraction. S-260, R-1 AU-55 BN.
A lavish mahogany aspect bedecks the relatively smooth surfaces that exhibit a glossy quality. Some minor ticks and pin scratches are present, but they tend to be obscured by its alluring visual...
