Lot Title:
1891-S PCGS MS-64.
Description:
“Basining” is a polishing process whereby the radius, or concavity, of the faces of the dies is applied. This factors into how the metal of the planchet will flow upon receipt of a blow from the dies, and depending on whether the metal flow is inward or outward has a great impact on the appearance of the struck coin. The unusual cartwheel effect seen on this Morgan dollar is the result of dies that were slightly less convex than usual, resulting in the exceedingly attractive “dished” appearance that many collectors desire, and the coin’s semi-prooflike quality is thereby enhanced. An in-hand examination will be required for the viewer to properly assess and appreciate the effect, but your humble cataloger feels compelled to suggest that this coin be studied to understand the result of the basining process.
