Lot Title:
1852 J-140. PCGS PF-64.
Description:
Annular gold issues were first considered as an expedient remedy to the removal of silver coins from circulation. A condition that arose as the result of an escalating imbalance of silver's value with respect to that of gold. This particular copper-nickel, "off-metal" annular issue is ascribed as Judd-140, Pollock-167, Rarity-6. Having acquired a handsome golden aspect, it is considered part of the restrike series sold to collectors in 1859. The inscriptions along with the laurel wreath motif are quite prominent.
