This "No Arrows" variety is listed as Breen 3988 or Briggs 1-A. In previous years, this date was erroneously labeled as 1853/2, now it is referred to as a "Recut Date" in the Guide Book. Perhaps it should be ascribed as a repunched date as this is perceived on the numerals "5" and "3". This handsome piece is copiously embellished in a robust pewter-gray. The wear is even, and there are no disturbing marks or blemishes on this pleasing, low mintage (44,200) example.
