(About The Images)
1809 S-280, R-2. MS-60+ Brown . 1809 S-280, R-2. MS-60+ Brown .
Lot Title: 1809 S-280, R-2. MS-60+ Brown .
Description: The 1809 large cent has the peculiar distinction of being one of the few large cent dates for which there is only one known die-marriage (S-280). Because the planchets imported from England were, for the most part, sub-par prior to being coined, the majority of 1809 Classic Head cents were susceptible to becoming dark and porous. Fortunately, the present example is remarkably smooth, considering the type, and despite our assignment of a “brown” designation, the coloration retains enough red to enhance the visual appeal. Although well-centered, with sharp detail definition on both its obverse and reverse, some portions along the rims do not feature strong denticulation, and a couple of minuscule surface marks can be found on the obverse at 11:30. A discernible raised furrow is viewed next to the inside of the eleventh star. Extremely elusive in mint-state grades, this is an elegant example that should please the early copper collector, and it should be noted that neither of the two major grading services has yet assigned a “RD” or “RB” designation to any uncirculated example.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
