Lot Title:

1800 (1799) Washington Silver Funeral Medal. Baker 166A, R-6. VF-20.
|
Description:
|
Weighs 149.69 grains (9.7 grams), has a diameter of 29.0 mm., and a medal turn alignment. The piece was made with a diminutive hole at approximately 12 o'clock through which a thin wire loop could suspend the issue from an outer garment. This particular obverse/reverse design combination was to be worn for the second of two Boston funeral processions -- one that took place on February 22nd, 1800. The reverse abbreviated inscription gives the details of his date of birth, accomplishments, and date of death. The piece is quite handsome for the assigned grade level. The central motifs are accented in a light silver hue surrounded by deep magenta tones that are accentuated by tinges of russet and blue. Some old scratches are evident on fairly well-defined design elements. An estimated 150 to 240 pieces are extant from six die combinations for this most historic political relic.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
