1877 PCGS PF-66.

Description:

The mintage of 510 or so pieces is presumed to equal the number of Proof Silver Sets for 1877, and indeed, only Proof examples of the Shield Nickel were struck; no business-strike examples are known to exist. The example at hand today is simply sumptuous, with highly reflective fields flashing a blend of delicate rose and blue highlights. Thorough examination with a glass uncovers a minuscule speck at the inside obverse rim at approximately 2:30, and an insignificant lint mark appears in the reverse field above the right period. Slight frost can be discerned on the design elements, and extremely brash definition is apparent in all areas of this important key. PCGS has certified a total of 367 pieces within this grade level classification, but only 32 at this lofty level, and none finer.
