Lot Title:
|
1877 NGC PF-66 Cameo.
|
Description:
|
Surfaces sparkle and gleam with the hard chrome luster that proof shield nickels are known for, and there is neither haze nor toning present on either side. NGC has supplied a "cameo" designation, although your cheerful cataloger would be remiss in not pointing out that the reverse actually displays minimal contrast. A pair of minuscule scratches are carefully hidden near the top of the horizontal shield lines, but either side remains otherwise untroubled from impairment. 1877 is the key date to the series, and literally only a handful have ever been certified in a grade higher than PF-66.

1877 PCGS PF-63.

Modest reflectivity may be the result of imperfect storage, as minor pest spots can be seen on the obverse, scattered mostly outside the boundary of the shield. However, some cameo frost is evident... |

1877 PCGS PF-66.

The mintage of 510 or so pieces is presumed to equal the number of Proof Silver Sets for 1877, and indeed, only Proof examples of the Shield Nickel were struck; no business-strike examples are known... |

An exquisite proof only issue having mirrorlike surfaces embellished with delicate lilac highlights. A few light hairlines and trivial ticks to note for this prominently struck issue. |
