Lot Title:

1865 $5.00. Newnan, GA Charter# 1861 Rays. VG.
|
Description:
|
First National Bank of Newnan, Georgia. Scarce new discovery note that is exciting for many reasons. There are only five reported Original Series notes from the entire State of Georgia. Just five -- two $1 notes, a $5, a $20, and a $50. One of the $1 examples is also from the First National Bank of Newnan, but this discovery note is the only $5 Original Series known on the bank. What's more, there are no $5 notes reported on the bank at all. That's right, out of the 31 notes reported on this bank, none of them represent the $5 denomination. The Newnan bank was founded in 1871 by W.B. Berry, who was also named president of the bank. This note is signed by Mr. Berry and the cashier, Mr. L. J. Hill. Both signatures are faded but mostly legible. The antique colored paper is conditionally about what you would expect from a VG. There are a few small internal punctures, and the margins are a bit ragged in areas. The ink quality, however, is more than pleasing for the grade. This is a seldom encountered opportunity to obtain a southern First Charter note of such scarcity.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
