Lot Title:

1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Backwards N. N.10, Cr.1a-C. R-3. VG-10+.
|
Description:
|
This variety is diagnostic on the obverse by the depiction of the hollow tree trunk and the roots that portray two concise diagonals projecting up towards the tree trunk. The reverse shows the distinctive "Backwards N" on the first N of ENGLAND. There are two S-shaped bends in the planchet as a result of the rocker press operation. The obverse legend is elongated at the top and cramped on the planchet's bottom. Despite its lower grade attribution, the tree shows admirable definition, and the "bird's nest" die break in the right branches is discernible. Save for the 1 in the date, the "652," and the denomination "XII," are distinct. About 50% of the legend is perceived on the obverse, while almost 80% of the reverse legend is present. With no detrimental surface marks, its light pewter-gray aspect proffers a quality heirloom character.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
